Ann McClellan
I began to understand the process of making ceramics during
my apprenticeship in a traditional studio in Karatsu, located on
the southern island of Kyuushu, Japan. I went to this area
because of the Korean influence on this region's ceramics.
16th century wares, produced during the Momoyama period
in Japan and during the reign of the Yi dynasty in Korea are
where I derive my strongest influence.
Certain shapes and colors, functional wares in muted yellows,
greys, and off-whites with iron oxide brushwork are particularly
compelling to me. They embody an element of wabi-sabi: aged
refinement. The history of eastern ceramics is rich, especially
those used for tea ceremony. Ceramic production is a journey.
I am content to be making the simple, functional bowls that
I'm generating.
