TURNING AN HISTORIC BUILDING BACK INTO A VIGOROUS SYMBOL OF COMMUNITY PRIDE
The Lincoln Street Center for Arts and Education has sprung to life in the historic building that housed the original Rockland High School which was closed as an educational institution after 130 years. It is fitting that Rockland’s original high school and later, its middle school, has been converted into an arts and education center, continuing its primary function of teaching the community. Many of the people who have taken an active role in the development of Lincoln Street Center have warm memories of their years as students of Rockland High School and have contributed money, muscle, and ideas to bring this community center of creativity and learning into being.
The Lincoln Street Center regularly schedules exhibits and artistic events consisting of diverse artwork from many artists both local and national and has an execllent gallery open to the public. In addition many performance events are held in the centers 300 seat auditorium and have included musical performances by nationally known bands and performers, poetry readings, plays, and one person performance pieces. The center's many schoolrooms from its days as a learning institution are used for artist studios, meeting rooms, gathering places for community meetings and events as well as classrooms.
